D-1 Cold Case - Luigi's Mansion 2 Guide - IGN (2024)

D-1: Cold Case is the first mission for the Secret Mine. A Dark Moon Fragment is in the Secret Mine somewhere, and to find it, Luigi is going to need help from the Toad assigned to the place. In this Luigi's Mansion 2 HD walkthrough, we will guide you through every step of the mission, including all Boo and Gem locations.

This walkthrough will also work for Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on the 3DS!

Chalet Approach

Once you've been pixelated onto the mansion grounds, head up the approach to the Chalet, sucking in any snow drifts in your path.

Money Spots: You may notice a mirror as you walk by. Suck up the snow in front of it with your Poltergust, and open the chest for a nice cash bonus. For more cash, kick the tree in the corner to release two gold crows. There is also a frozen gold bar on the grill that can be melted, and if you look in the window, you can spy a Hider on the rocking chair who will release some money.

Chalet

As soon as you enter the Chalet, you will be jumped by several Hiders and a Sneaker. Back yourself up against a corner to catch the Sneaker in front of you and dodge the incoming objects that the Hiders will throw your way. Once you've cleared all the ghosts, interact with the lever on the right wall to get further directions from the Professor. Then, move on to the Smokehouse.

Money Spot: Suck up the tail of the polar bear skin on the floor for a Gold Greenie.

Smokehouse

Sapphire #1: Use your Dark-Light to reveal the missing towel rack on the back wall then suck both of the towels off to reveal a secret alcove.

Money Spot: Shoot the hot rock at the frozen pully on the left, then yank it to collect your bounty!

As you explore the Smokehouse, it becomes apparent that the door is frozen and needs to be thawed out before you can pass through to the other side.

Interact with the stove to start a fight with two Greenies, one of which is carrying a stone as a weapon. Suck the stone out of its hands and defeat the ghosts, then use the burning rock to melt the door.

Ice Lake

Head across the Ice Lake, taking note of the figure sneaking around in the background, and approach the Fishing Hut. Reveal the hidden door with a Dark-Light and head inside.

Money Spot: Look down and to the right before entering the Fishing Hut. There is something buried in the snow. Use the Poltergust to find a hockey puck. Luckily for Luigi, there's an ice hockey goal not far away. Shoot the puck into the goal, triggering two Gold Greenies to emerge. Defeat the Greenies to collect your winnings.

Fishing Hut

Sapphire #2: There is a small gap in the floorboards near the front left side of the Fishing Hut that hides the gem. Use your Poltergust to suck the gem out and add it to your collection.

After the Boo takes off, begin clearing away the snow and ice that is covering the floor. The icy floor will reveal what's really hanging on the wall. Collect the gem before saving Toad so you don't have to redo the level, then shine your Dark-Light on the Toad portrait to bring him back to the world of the living.

After you've saved him, you will both find yourselves in the Basem*nt.

Under the Ice

Sapphire #3: There is a small peephole against the bottom wall that gives you a nice view of the next gem. Luigi can't reach it himself, however. Instead, go to the upper level and throw Toad down the small shaft. He will appear at the bottom, breaking right through the peephole with the gem in tow.

Money Spots: There are a lot of different places to find money in this room, starting with the chest behind the ice slide. You can also pull the line out of the frozen fish's mouth to reveal a Goldie. Once on the upper level, suck up the snow pile to reveal a geyser that leads to a small platform full of gold bars.

Suck Toad into the Poltergust and use the geyser on the left side of the room to lift you both up to the second level. Exit through the door on the left.

Terminal

Sapphire #4: Head north to the High Wires area and hitch a ride on the zip line to reach a platform. There, you will find a gem sitting in a nest. Suck it up with your Poltergust.

Nothing much can be done in this room yet, so take Toad with you and head all the way to the left to the Airway.

Airway

Sapphire #5: Peek through the binoculars by the scales to see a giant frozen mouth blowing cold air. A gem lies in there, only to be snatched by a bat and dumped in a nearby barrel. Make your way down to the other side of the Airway to get it.

Hidden Boo: Boofoon - While traveling through the Terminal to reach Prospector's Crossing, suck up the curtain covering the mirror wall to reveal the source of the giggling Boo. Shine your Dark-Light on the invisible barrel near the door to find it.

When you reach the Airway, Toad will point out that the Zip Line is not operational, and you will have to find another way around.

Punt Toad into the scale above your head to collect the key and head back through the Terminal. Then, move south to the Prospector's Crossing.

Prospector's Crossing

Toad isn't up for crossing the thin ice, so blast him across with your Poltergust. Follow him over before he gets antsy and runs back to you, then continue through to the Drift Hall.

Drift Hall

Before you head down the stairs, head right and cross the ice bridge to reach a chest nestled in the snow. Grab the key from the chest before moving down the left stairs. Fend off some bats before opening the door to the Basin.

Money Spot: Before entering the basin, examine the explosives on the far left. Clear out the snow, then drag a fuse over to a torch on the stairs. After the explosion, you'll find a secret contraption that leads to a minigame. Quickly grab pieces of coal to fill in the spots on the giant snowman before time runs out!

Basin

Several Sneakers think themselves very clever as they prepare to ambush you, but unbeknownst to them, you can see their reflections on the icy floor.

Nab as many as you can, being very careful, as Luigi's traction on the ice is spotty at best. Defeat the ghosts and continue to the Airway.

Airway

Use your Poltergust on the left side of the bridge to tighten it up, creating a high wire for Luigi to cross. This section can be very tricky, so watch out for the gusts of air and make sure you are countering them by leaning into the wind so it doesn't blow you clean off the rope.

Pull the right side tight once you safely cross to make the bridge walkable, and remember to pick up the Sapphire in the barrel you saw earlier. Take the elevator back up to the Chalet and bring Toad to the computer to finish the mission. You're now ready to take on the next quest, D-2 Hit Rock Bottom.
